Description

Southern Pacific Railroad. General Motors Electro-Motive Division, construction number 33999, built August 1968, class SD-39, engine number 5301.  Very nice condition.  Some remnants of glue on the backside from being mounted in a frame.

With only 26 total units delivered, this is an oddball class of mainline freight power.  Delivered in 1968, the units were initially assigned to the Texas lines.  Following their service in Texas they made their way to Southern Pacific famous and iconic Tehachapi line where the would be immortalized in classic photos of heavy mountain mainline railroading.  After years of hard freight service they would be downgraded to heavy switchers at the West Colton hump yard and then end their careers handling transfer service in the Los Angeles basin.

When first delivered, these locomotives had Southern Pacific's unique five-light package and snowplows on both ends.  They also had an interesting feature of the brake wheel being stand mounted on the rear platform of the long hood.
